Meet the team of researchers who staff our program

Ανδρέας Γκόφας

Andreas Gofas

Andreas Gofas is the scientific editor of IDIS China Program. Andreas is a Professor of International Relations at Panteion University of Athens, and Director of the European Cultural Centre of Delphi. He is also the academic representative of Greece at the High Council of the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, and co-director of the Olympia Summer Academy.

Electra Kaltsoni

Electra Kaltsoni is a doctoral candidate at Panteion University. She studied Turkish and Modern Asian Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and holds a Master’s degree in Chinese Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. 

Yorgos Moraitis

Dr. Moraitis is a Ph.D. holder with a Marie Curie Fellowship, specialising in China’s early engagement with Western International law. He is currently working on his first monograph, ‘Robert Hart and Sino-Foreign Disputes in Qing China, 1863-1908: Negotiating Sovereignty’ (to be published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2025). Dr. Moraitis has previously taught at the University of Belfast and is now a faculty member in the Political Science Department at the University of Crete.

Joanna Nestorides

Joanna Nestorides is a research assistant in the China program. She studied Law (LLB, LLM, Esq.) and Political Science (BA), and her research engagement with China began at the College of Europe in Natolin (Adv. MA in European Interdisciplinary Studies), where she studied on a scholarship and served as Head of Transatlantic-China Relations, focusing on Sino-European relations through the lens of the European Union’s energy autonomy. She also served as an organizing member of European Guanxi. Professionally, in addition to being a lawyer, she works as a Public Affairs Officer in Brussels in the field of international trade with China.

Alexandra Nikopoulou

Alexandra Nikopoulou is a project manager of the program. She holds a PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Peloponnese. She holds a BA in International and European Studies from the University of Piraeus and a Masters in Mediterranean Studies from the University of Peloponnese. Since 2017, she has been a researcher at the Center for Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (KEMMIS).

Tasos Panoutsopoulos

Tasos Panoutsopoulos is a postdoctoral researcher in the program. Previously, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies at Princeton (2022-2024). In 2022, he received his PhD from the Department of History at the University of Athens, with the support of the A.G. Leventis Foundation. He conducted archival research in Cyprus, in the USA, as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Columbia (2018-2019), and in the UK, as a Visiting Research Student at LSE (2017).

Fenia Papakosma

Fenia Papakosma is the language instructor of IDIS China Program. She studied Translation and Interpretation at the University of Salford and lived and worked in Madrid and Paris. In 2001, she moved to China, where she lived, worked, and studied the language for six years. In 2008, she completed her studies with a Master’s degree in Chinese Studies at SOAS, University of London. In 2017, she attended a seminar on Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language at Beijing International Chinese College on a scholarship. In 2020, she founded Mandarin Books publishing house, from which her second book, “Chinese Grammar for All Levels,” was released. Since 2009, she has been living and working in Athens

Harry Papasotiriou

Harry Papasotiriou is a senior research associate of IDIS China Program. He graduated with honors from Oxford (School of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics) and obtained his doctorate from Stanford (Department of Political Science). He is a Professor of International Relations at Panteion University, and the president of the Scientific Board of the Institute of International Relations. He participates in the Scientific Council of the Konstantinos Karamanlis Institute of Democracy. He is the first international relations scholar in Greece to research and teach China’s international relations

Dimitrios Stroikos

Dimitrios Stroikos is a postdoctoral researcher at the IDIS China Program. He is also Head of the Space Policy project at LSE IDEAS and a guest teacher at the Department of International Relations, LSE. He holds a PhD in International Relations from LSE, and an MSc in Modern Chinese Studies from the University of Oxford. He is the co-editor of the recently published book Rising Power, Limited Influence: The Politics of Chinese Investments in Europe and the Liberal International Order (Oxford University Press).

Konstantinos Tsimonis

Konstantinos Tsimonis is the academic lead of IDIS China Program. He first went to China in 2003 and studied there for five years in total. During his doctoral studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London he did his fieldwork in China as a visiting doctoral student at Peking University. Since 2015, he has been working at the Lau China Institute and since 2022, he has been a member of the Institute of International Relations, Panteion University.
